I do recall thinking Shelton made a big mistake casting his buddy Robert Wuhl in such a major role: not that the character isn't already poorly written, but Wuhl brings nothing to the table the way Jones does. The problem with a Ron Shelton movie trying to "make a case" for something (or, even trickier, trying to deconstruct the case as he's making it) is Shelton thrives on detours and digressions. That's what makes "Bull Durham," "Tin Cup," even parts of "Blaze" special; those films aren't models of structure, and that's generally to their betterment.
