I remembered it as being well-acted. Uh. No. It isn't well-anythinged.

What a disaster! There's a scene on a ship where Pacino's character gets pissy with Depp's and sends them to the bow: "You disgust me. I can't even look at you." If the scene went on any longer, he would have said: "It's like you don't even know me anymore."Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163321594858726822.post-63717892948786694812008-02-18T21:20:00.000-05:002008-02-18T21:20:00.000-05:00Rob: Good points. And to that degree at least, Benigni's performance is appropriate (I do have a problem winning Best Actor for it though).

As for Rain Man, that's exactly what I'm getting at. When people turn up their noses at that performance, are they really ripping Hoffman or are they ripping the character's obsession with "People's Court"? Would a Brando, De Niro, Whoever been more convincing in that part? Kind of hard for me to imagine.Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163321594858726822.post-51746661576657406982008-02-18T20:59:00.000-05:002008-02-18T20:59:00.000-05:00Oh, and knocking Hoffman for "Rain Man" is revisio...Oh, and knocking Hoffman for "Rain Man" is revisionist history. His performance was spot-on the first time, and still is. Just because the movie has become overplayed, and the character overquoted, that shouldn't devalue the original performance.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12643896750707390405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1163321594858726822.post-18131007937908836292008-02-18T20:57:00.000-05:002008-02-18T20:57:00.000-05:00Wasn't the point of "Life is Beautiful" that only ...Wasn't the point of "Life is Beautiful" that only unabashed optimism could get that character through unspeakable tragedy? Wasn't Benigni's performance thus appropriate?

Sorry, but I liked that movie, and thought he did a great job. Too bad he had to push it over the top. Too bad he couldn't have won a Best Actor Oscar for Malcolm X. As for Freeman, even though he might have been pushing the showmanship, his role in Shawshank was a great one. He was much better, much more sensitive and touching in Glory - but Denzel got that one. And Freeman's Oscar-winning role in Million Dollar Baby was weak - but he was lucky to have that opportunity since good strong roles for Freeman - and Denzel as well - are few and far between. More often than not they play cops.Richard Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12397053921647421425noreply@blogger.com
