Best Movie Posters of 2010

I tend to like simple, striking images that evoke a film's themes but that are also somehow compelling as stand-alone art. Interestingly, my favorite posters of 2010 often line up with my favorite films of 2010. Or maybe there's some logic to that connection. Regardless, as it happens, there's another theme that unites three of this year's posters that I didn't even notice until I uploaded them into Blogger. Silly me.

So, tell me, what did I miss?

I loved how the design of The American's poster is done to evoke the 'international spy/cop' posters of the 1960s and 1970s.

Until now, I had never seen the second versions of the Black Swan and The King's Speech posters. Those second versions are drastically different from their main ones, at least thematically.

And as far as a linking theme? I'm still scratching my head. Symmetry seems to be common, as well as the angel theme, but if you're hinting at another, more subtle theme, I'm stumped. Great collection, though, and I look forward to keeping up with your work in 2011.

As Jamie indicates, there's a theme involving "wings" with Black Swan, The Expendables, and Let Me In. If there's something more I'm missing it.

No, nothing more than that. It's the winged theme.

Like Jamie, I love the throwback nature of the poster for The American. I called that a Steve McQueen movie, and actually the poster is a lot like this one for Bullitt. (I hope that link works.)

Some of my favorites here, too. I loved the poster for The American - and that snow-angel for Let Me In is fantastic. Just fanTAStic.

Excellent choices. I love the Let Me In poster that shows the girl (or boy) lying in a fetal position, isolated in the middle of the image. 127 Hours is one of my favorites.

Just looking through a gallery of this year's posters, most of them are entirely redundant bits of Photoshopping that don't do much to stand out from the crowd. That even goes for some of the movies you showcase here, as the posters you point out are the "alternative" ones that most people don't see at the theaters.

With that in mind, I love the ones you chose for Black Swan, The American, and Let Me In. Some other ones that stand out for me would be these:

I Am Love
I'm Still Here
Buried
Jack Goes Boating

Good additions! And interesting because ...

* Jack Goes Boating nearly made my list. Something about it draws me in. Perhaps I left it off because the trailer for that film -- I didn't see the movie -- annoyed me after repeated viewings. But the poster itself is terrific.

* I Am Love and I'm Still Here have a similar look and feel. Meantime, they are posters that I saw on the walls of my local art house that would make me stop to ponder if I liked them or not. I suppose the fact I spent so much time staring at them trying to make that decision says something to their power.

* I missed that alternate version for Buried. But I like it.

I was a bit in love with the I Love You Phillip Morris poster with the two figures making a heart-shape in their orange jumpsuits. I wrote a little piece about it on my site. One of those images that made me smile just by looking at it. Not as dark as some of the images here, but totally effective at expressing joy and absurdity.

Hey, I have really found the extreme and exotic tiles of the year of 2010 from this post. As the existing Black Swan and Piranha 3D movie posters are massively looking most elegant among them. Thanks for sharing.
